Summary of Planning Meeting October 30, 2011

Twenty women from six parishes, and some without parish affiliation, gathered at St. Andrew Parish on October 30 to begin developing a one-year plan for activities and events to further the OSOC movement. The meeting was facilitated by Joan Miller.

Goals for OSOC for the coming year were defined:

1.     Continue raising women’s awareness of inequalities and injustices in the Church.

2.     Develop and enhance grassroots efforts.

3.     Foster growth of women’s circles in their own parishes.

4.     Continue educating women about how Vatican II relates to the goals of OSOC.

Many positive ideas came from small group discussions on developing and fostering the growth of parish circles. These include sharing how other circles were established, what topics they discuss, action items, finding meeting times convenient for various age groups, calling friends and family to spread the word, personal invitations. Topics may include Vatican II, aspects of feminine spirituality, women involved in the liturgy, the new Roman Missal, discussion of selected books or articles, or issues unique to that parish. Communication among the circles was cited as a help and support for beginning circles. Those unaffiliated with a parish may form their own circle or ask to join an existing circle.

Several activities throughout the year were suggested: a retreat; celebration of women in the Church, e.g., Mary Magdalene or St. Hildegard; evening prayer and potluck; liturgy followed by an event; education on Vatican II or other aspects of Church history. Outreach to women of all ages and building diversity were cited as goals.

In the large group session, there was strong support for another prayerful public event, although perhaps at a different time and setting.

Women interested in helping to plan an event are asked to contact OSOC through the website.
